Life Insurance - Why Should I Buy Life insurance?

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

If you have dependents or other people with whom you share your life, life insurance can play a vital and valuable role at virtually every stage of your life. Many financial experts consider life insurance to be the cornerstone of sound financial planning. It can be an important tool in the following situations:

  1. Replace income for dependents - If people depend on your income, life insurance can replace that income for them if you die. The most commonly recognized case of this is parents with young children. However, it can also apply to couples in which the survivor would be financially stricken by the income lost through the death of a partner, and to dependent adults, such as parents, siblings or adult children who continue to rely on you financially. Insurance to replace your income can be especially useful if the government- or employer-sponsored benefits of your surviving spouse or domestic partner will be reduced after your death.
  2. Pay final expenses - Life insurance can pay your funeral and burial costs, probate and other estate administration costs, debts and medical expenses not covered by health insurance.
  3. Create an inheritance for your heirs - Even if you have no other assets to pass to your heirs, you can create an inheritance by buying a life insurance policy and naming them as beneficiaries.
  4. Pay federal “death” taxes and state “death” taxes - Life insurance benefits can pay estate taxes so that your heirs will not have to liquidate other assets or take a smaller inheritance. Changes in the federal “death” tax rules between now and January 1, 2011 will likely lessen the impact of this tax on some people, but some states are offsetting those federal decreases with increases in their state-level “death” taxes.
  5. Make significant charitable contributions - By making a charity the beneficiary of your life insurance, you can make a much larger contribution than if you donated the cash equivalent of the policy’s premiums.
  6. Create a source of savings - Some types of life insurance create a cash value that, if not paid out as a death benefit, can be borrowed or withdrawn on the owner’s request. Since most people make paying their life insurance policy premiums a high priority, buying a cash-value type policy can create a kind of “forced” savings plan. Furthermore, the interest credited is tax deferred (and tax exempt if the money is paid as a death claim).

Health Insurance - What Kinds of Health Insurance Are There?

The rising cost of medical care and the resulting pressure on health insurance premiums makes health insurance top priority if you want to have your health expenses covered at a reasonable cost. The current health insurance system is quite complex and constantly changing. The information below may help answer your questions: What kinds of health insurance are there? There are essentially two kinds of health insurance:

  • Fee-for-Service; and
  • Managed care;

Although these plans differ, they both cover an array of medical, surgical and hospital expenses. Most cover prescription drugs and some also offer dental coverage. Fee-for-Service – these plans generally assume that the medical professional will be paid a fee for each service provided to the patient. Patients are seen by a doctor of their choice and the claim is filed by either the medical provider or the patient. Managed Care – more than half of all Americans have some kind of managed-care-plan. Various plans work differently and can include: health maintenance organisations (HMOs), preferred provider organisations (PPOs) and point-of-service (POS) plans. These plans provide comprehensive health services to their members and offer financial incentives to patients who use the providers in the plan.Source: The Insurance Information Institute …www.iii.org

Insurance - Auto Insurance

What is auto insurance? If you own a car, is not just an option - it is a legal necessity. And you wouldn’t want it any other way. If you are involved in an accident or have your car stolen, owning the right kind of auto insurance can help to ease a difficult situation. The information below will provide some answers and help you ask the right questions in order to find the most appropriate solutions.Auto insurance protects you against financial loss if you have an accident. It is a contract between you and the insurance company. You agree to pay the premium and the insurance company agrees to pay your losses as defined in your policy.Auto insurance provides property, liability and medical coverage:

  • Property coverage pays for damage to or theft of your car.
  • Liability coverage pays for your legal responsibility to others for bodily injury or property damage.
  • Medical coverage pays for the cost of treating injuries, rehabilitation and sometimes lost wages and funeral expenses.
  • An auto insurance policy is comprised of six different kinds of coverage. Most states require you to buy some, not all, of these coverages. If you’re financing a car, your lender may also have requirements.

Most auto policies are for six months to a year. Your insurance company should notify you by mail when it’s time to renew the policy and to pay your premium.

Insurance – Which Insurance Company Should You Choose?

There are very many so choosing among then can be a daunting challenge. Here are some basic points to consider when making your selection:

Is the Company financially sound? You should check independent and other rating agencies to ensure that the companies you are looking at are financially sound. Make a short-list of companies you are interested in.

Is the Price Competitive? – Prices can vary greatly from one company to another, so you need to shop around. As a minimum, you should get 3 quotes from the companies on your short list. Some consumer associations or websites may publish a comparative guide that shows what different insurers charge for similar policies.

Sometimes price is not the only issue you should consider as some companies offer different benefits which are often difficult to value in $ terms. Also, you should look at the stated terms and conditions usually found in “the fine print”.

Does the Company Have a Good Customer Service Record? Your insurance company and its sales representatives should answer any questions and handle your claims fairly, efficiently and quickly. You can get a feel for whether this is the case by talking to friends and other customers who have used a particular company or agent. You may aso want to check consumer associations and/or websites to see what complaint information it has on a company.

How Easy is it to Contact the Company? You should feel comfortable with your insurance purchase, whether you buy it from a local agent, directly from the company over the phone, or over the Internet. Make sure that the agent or company will be easy to reach if you have a question or need to file a claim.

Is the Company Registration Form Easy to Understand and Complete? Make sure that you understand all the questions to which you need to give answers, to avoid any future problems if a claim is later made.

Is the Claims Form Easy to Understand and Complete? Make sure that you fully understand what documents are required if and when you make a claim so as to avoid any delays or disputes in receiving payment or invalidation of your claim.
